Upgrades and Changes to Enhance Technology

The University of Phoenix will be considering many changes to it’s future in online education. Some of the enhancements and necessary technological advancements will include but are not limited to: Virtual worlds such as those provided by Second Life, enhancements to mobile devices and SNS for personalization for individual education plans. “Wired, highly customized, social, enhanced by multimedia, and utterly immersive. Social networking, mobile devices, virtual worlds, and customized and adaptive curricula are trends poised to change the face of higher education” (Vien, 2010).

In the years to come, UOPX will make a push to reach a diverse population not known to be able to afford online education. Online education is costly, considering the hardware and software capabilities needed. Well, according to Adam Honea, Provost for UOPX, “The accessibility problem is going away. Changes are coming in technology that are driving costs down. Wireless networks are allowing underdeveloped areas to leapfrog and not have to build new telecommunications systems. New computers are on their way that are being driven by handheld devices like smartphones. Computers are on a downslope in price — they’re one of the few items that get cheaper and cheaper even as performance goes up.” For example, the cost of storing one megabyte of information in 1975 was $5,257. In 1999, it was 17 cents. It’s less than 1/10th of a cent today” (Vien, 2010).
