What technologies are currently in use?
University of Phoenix (UOP) is considered to be one of the leading universities in the US and the world because of its innovative use of technology in a formal and non-formal learning environment. UOP has technologies in place that enhance the learning process and support both faculty and students by incorporating discussion boards, on-line library, electronic textbooks and more. Using the library site, students have a chance to review their papers before submission for grammatical error and to make sure that the material is unique. The UOP online platform uses digital format to deliver learning materials and distribute academic content known as the virtual or electronic classroom. The online learning environment (OLS) has expanded to include electronic books (e-books) and online library allowing course participants to access any needed article, paper, book, journal, or archives at anytime and anywhere. Topic-based online simulation that enables the use of “critical thinking skills to decision making situation” (UOP, 2011) is also used at UOP. Virtual organizations help the adult learner simulate real world environment to help prepare for their future career. UOP always seeks innovative ways to enhance the learning process and to add more communication and collaboration tools. Some of the new tools added recently to UOP LMS are Phoenix Connect that helps connect the UOP community. Another recent addition is the chat tool that allows learners to communicate and collaborate with fellow classmates, within the teams, and with the facilitator. This tool contains a group chat, a one-on-one chat and also allows inviting friends from other classes within the university to join the learner’s site.
